A word so simple – literally suggesting taking care of oneself, is often an overlooked idea. However, light has been shed and the practices of self-care have been adopted by many in order to maintain a healthy and balanced lifestyle. Yet, in a turbulent situation like the pandemic, things can be overwhelming.

How have you been coping with the “new normal”?

Our normalcy has changed dramatically for a few months and it is rather soon to define our new normal. However, adapting to a new environment, especially a chaotic one is stressful. While struggling to adjust in the “new normal” and busy taking care of our loved ones, an important question yet lingers.

Are you taking care of yourself too? How much have you invested in self-care since the beginning of the pandemic?

To the majority, the answer must be “not much” – as opposed to our loved ones. One reason for such an answer could be the misunderstanding of the concept i.e. a selfish act to take care of oneself instead of others in such a critical time. Another reason could be having difficulty in adjusting to the current situation resulting in a lack of mindfulness.

Nonetheless, you need to understand that despite any chaotic situation, you have to be conscious of maintaining good health – physical, mental, and emotional. Or else, you put yourself at risk of burnout, fatigue, insomnia, and other health risks.

Don’t know how to practice self-care? Some of the ideas are mentioned below:

Physical

Physical engagement is one of the best ways to maintain bodily well-being. For many of you, going to the gym or outdoor games must instinctively come to mind when you think of getting physically active.

However, amidst the pandemic, it is risky to engage in outdoor activities. So, engaging in the following activities might work for you:

  1. You can workout at home in the meantime and engage your muscles actively. But, don’t push yourself beyond limits
  2. Dancing to your favorite songs will help loosen up your body
  3. Add healthy foods to your diet and stay hydrated
  4. Engage in gardening. Plant your favorites and decorate your garden or backyard
  5. Take some rest and have a good sleep

Emotional

Stress and problems are a normal part of our life but how we respond to them determines our emotional health. Many people have difficulty in accepting their emotions that can deteriorate their health.

Especially at a time like this, stress and problems are hard to cope up with. For better emotional health, you can:

  1. Keeping a journal to express your thoughts and feelings will clear your mind
  2. Normalize the acceptance of emotions – both good and bad
  3. Expressing your emotions and feelings to your near ones will lighten up your heart
  4. Don’t compare yourself to others. Everyone is different so, learn to accept your differences
  5. Keep yourself busy in activities that make you feel good

Psychological

Thoughts and feelings play a vital role in one’s psychological well-being. The way you think and talk to yourself has a huge influence on your mental health.

Amidst the pandemic, investing in psychological care can be healthy as well as productive. Here are some ideas:

  1. Learn to say “no” to things that discomforts you
  2. Explore your curiosity and see what the world has to offer
  3. Stimulate your brain with puzzles, reading, and learning
  4. Be vocal on complimenting about things you like
  5. Be kind to yourself and maintain optimistic inner dialogue

Spiritual

Spirituality is a broad concept consisting of several individual perspectives, that answers profound questions to achieve meaning and purpose to life. Any activity that connects you to your true self brings balance to your spiritual well-being.

Maintaining calm and composure at times like these is difficult yet possible. So, self-care at a spiritual level mustn’t be neglected.

  1. Doing yoga daily will help bring positivity in your thoughts
  2. Practicing meditation and mindfulness will help you calm your mind
  3. Saying affirmations daily will boost your confidence, self-esteem
  4. Practice gratitude and forgiveness
  5. Take some time off your regular routine and reflect on your inner self. Nurture your inner peace

Social

As social creatures, socializing and engaging with people keeps us sane. Also, building relationships are hard but neglecting is not. Especially at a time like this, the best way to maintain your relationships is to put your time and effort into it.

Everyone has different social needs so, practice what works best for you:

  1. Spending time with your close ones will help strengthen your relationships
  2. Reconnect with distant family and friends and check up on them
  3. Engage in positive social content
  4. Do not hesitate to cut down communication with negative people
  5. Ask for help, if needed

It is necessary to take time for ourselves, especially now. Take some time, introspect your habits, and focus on your requirements.

To the majority who answered “not much”, may the mentioned practices aid in your good health.
