Toxic Nationality Or Noble Patriotism? | Sudarshan Poudel
Nationalism is the identification of one’s own nation and support for its interest. It’s the sense we develop, that we belong to this land and want to contribute something so that the nation grows.
Just like Nationalism, Patriotism fosters a sense of strong connection to a nation. Everyone should strive to be as patriotic as possible. This will help the country’s growth.
These all are some stated definitions. But are we able to differentiate? We Nepalese are so obsessed with Nationalism. The feelings of Nationalism and Patriotism have helped us to root out some disgusting ruling system. We should have that feeling but why are we nursing the sense of toxic Nationality?
“India is better than Nepal”. Did you feel a pinch by reading this statement? Why? Because of that toxic Nationality.
We don’t observe and understand things. In what aspect am I saying it? We don’t look at things from this perspective. We are Nepalese with bravery in bloodstreams. Let chop this moron. Let’s think first, in what aspect it is better. In the aspect of economic development, in the aspect of science and technology, it is far better. Let’s think twice before abusing. India can be our nearest example but we should cut off our toxic Nationality.
We Nepalese youths get manipulated very easily by anti-Indian political strategies. Last time, we have experienced a huge wave of abusing content throughout the internet and comment sections full of conflicts. Do you think that’s because we are patriotic? No! That’s because we have embedded toxic Nationality in our mind that is not allowing us to think twice. Proving ourselves superior is not being nationalists or patriotic. It’s about considering our failures and bringing some improvements to our system.
In the middle of thousands of starving people, I can’t say that I’m proud to be a Nepali. A country where elected leaders are concerned with their thrones instead of people’s lives, I can’t say that country beautiful. A man standing unemployed in between thousands of possibilities, can’t write, ” I love Nepal”. And if you think, under any condition, we should be proud to be Nepali, then you are raising toxic Nationality in you.
When anyone says, ” I don’t like Nepal”. Should we think, what had made him feel that way or should we sharpen our khukuris to chop him off? I will prefer to seek those weaknesses and improve them. Am I anti-National?
Toxic nationalism is an enemy of authentic patriotism. The great wars in history were because of these toxic feelings. It kills Harmony and obstructs improvements.
The borders between lands are man-made and not divinely ordained lines. Humanity and harmony come first. A real patriot knows how to love his/her country and respect the patriotic feelings of people of other nations. Let us be strong and not let any morons manipulate ourselves.
I would always love my motherland but not the way it is in. I prefer improvements. I prefer noble patriotism over toxic nationalism.
