Eckleburg which are blue and gigantic. He happens to meet Tom Buchanon’s mistress Myrtle Wilson; the wife of George Wilson who owns a garage in the valley of ashes. Chapter 3

Chapter 3 centers around the lavish party of Gatsby which he organizes every weekend in his mansion. His house and swimming pool ‘Rolls Royce’ are full of people from morning to late night. Many people have to work on Monday to clear up the mess after the party is over. Every Friday crates of oranges and lemons are brought from New York to make juice. Many neighbors come to the party and they enjoy foods and free flow of drinks. Many of them do not know each other and they don’t even know the host. Orchestra are busy playing with the music and entertaining the guests. Nick experiences closely to all the people. He notices that many of them are present uninvited.

From the description we can understand that the residence of East Egg and West Egg are shameless people. They are corrupt and morally down. They only show their shallow manners. They call themselves modern but they don’t have respect to each other. When they are present in the party without being invited, we can guess that these people are not rich but they are attracted to the well. It maybe because of impact of 1st world war. He used very polite language pronouncing ‘Old sport’ almost all the time. Gatsby studied at Oxford University. He had a red face with heavily built body structure.

While enjoying the party, Nick didn’t realize the night passed very fast. Jordan Baker and Nick were almost together talking about the people, their attitude, Gatsby and some current affairs. Then one person informed that Gatsby wanted to talk to her in private. Nick happened to see many couples, having conflicts, some wanted to go earlier to their houses while others wanted to stay. From their manner, Nick concludes that, people in Long Island aren’t happy with each other. Dishonesty is common for them. He doesn’t find honesty in any person. Therefore, at the end of the chapter 3, he comments “I’m one of the few honest people that I’ve ever known.”

When he asked Gatsby for reason of high speed, Gatsby showed him his identity card. Then the policeman apologized him for bothering. As they reached New York City, Gatsby took him to Mr. Meyer Woldsheim. He was Gatsby’s very old close friend. From conversation, Nick had negative impression about them.
