A marriage proposal by Anton Chekhov is a comedy drama in which three characters Choobookov, Lomov, and Natalia argue like children. The play presents their real characters when they involve in conflict for their possession of land and the superiority of dog which belongs to them each. Chekhov wants to show that in similar situations the people in reality hide their feelings. Lomov goes to Choobookov’s house with a marriage proposal to Natalia, the daughter of Choobookov.

It’s early in the morning, Lomov goes to Choobookov’s house in formal dress. Choobookov welcomes him with a great respect. When they exchange their greetings, Lomov reveals that his purpose of visiting the house is ask for Natalia’s hand. When Choobookov hears this, he jumps for joy. He instantly gives the words for their marriage. After sometime Natalia comes and they have warm conversation until they raise an issue related to the possession of Ox Meadows.

Natalia and Lomov clain that Ox Meadows belongs to them. Lomov says that the land was given to Natalia’s family many years ago for temporary use but Natalia’s father took it as their own property. On the other hand, Natalia claims that the property, belongs to them permanently. When Choobookov hears their hot debate, he joins them and takes the side of Natalia. Their debate becomes so aggressive that, Natalia and Choobookov warn him not to step in the house again. When they discuss in such manner, they forget the real purpose.

When Lomov returns his home, Natalia’s father tells Lomov’s purpose to come to the house. When she hears the marriage proposal, she demands her father to bring Lomov right away otherwise she threatens to kill herself. Choobookov brings Lomov back and Natalia says that now Ox Medows belongs to Lomov. However, they raise another issue regarding the superiority of dog. Natalia cliams that her dog Leap is superior to Lomov’s Guess. Once again the discussion becomes very hot. Lomov cannot tolerate any more when he is interiorized by father and daughter. As a result, he faints. They get extremely worried about him and think he is dead. When he comes back to consciousness, they become very happy and agree to get married immediately.

In this way, this is the real picture of human nature. Chekov believes that all human beings are similar to the characters but they control their emotions. The purpose of the play is to present the two nature of various kinds of people. In other words, all adults are like children in their true nature.
