Lockdown: Covid-19 as Enigma | Poem | Shakuntala Nayak

I see people in chain outside markets, standing one meter apart,

Food shelves are empty like deserts, panic at the start.

My heart beating quickly deep within my chest,

Thinking about my friends and family as well as all the rest.

Listening to the sound of silence, as still as the night,

People, all in their homes, holding each other tight.

The sound of people busily buying their basic needs,

Families spend time together anyhow feeding their kids.

Some people enjoy by spreading fake news,

Innocent people wonder, believe, and get confused.

Donors treat poor people as a showcase in the name of relief,

They take photos and videos together by stepping on their grief.

Our country has drowned in the deep ocean of corruption,

Let’s raise our voice against this through discussion.

All exams and programs have been postponed,

No option has been left to communicate except telephone.

Don’t stop and keep your labor to continue,

One day the time will heal this pandemic through glue.

I may be feeling lonely like a house on a tall hill,

But I’ll stay inside the home to stop others from getting ill.
