Why Social Media Is Boon
The word “social” in social media may sound deceiving in consideration of the personality traits of an introvert.
We have heard extroverts love socializing, but introverts are different. They rarely socialize. Their personality trait screams reserved, quiet, and reclusive. They don’t seek social engagements as such activities exhaust and drains them.
Moreover, they regain their energy by spending more time alone.
Don’t have an introvert friend? You can count me as one.
As an introvert, I ensure that socializing and expressing ourselves isn’t spontaneous. It is slightly out of our comfort zone yet from a different perspective, social media is a blessing for introverts. I, being an introvert having an introvert circle of few friends can bet that we love social media.
Social media plays a vital role in improving an introverts’ life. So, yes, social media is a boon for introverts too, just in a different way.
No idea? Here’s how social media is a boon for us:
1. Allows us to explore and discover ourselves
Introverts don’t easily expose themselves to the world so that limits their growth. But, with social media, exploration and discovery is endless.
It is a vast space to explore preferences and discover oneself from within. Numerous opportunities are attainable that boosts our personal growth or career. Social networking sites like YouTube, Pinterest, Quora helps us learn more about ourselves. And we love it.
I am a living example. I love helping people and volunteering is an activity I discovered. Volunteering has helped me fulfill my fondness for helping, along with my struggle to socialize. I have utilized much time in exploring my interests and I am grateful I know myself much better.
In general, social media helps discover what we truly enjoy. It has become one of the means to comprehend our true selves. That’s one reason why social media is a boon for introverts.
2. Communication is easy through writing
Writing is a means of expression. And, social media provides its platform to become vocal about our thoughts and feelings. It helps improve personal expression.
Moreover, with the benefit of anonymity, introverts can easily come out of their comfort zone to express themselves. This is an incredible way to improve one’s communication and writing skills.
I had a mental battle before writing this article on whether I should write it or not. Is it worth writing or not? But here I am, near the end of this article. And I feel good.
3. Access to easy and comfortable relationship building
Relationship building is difficult for introverts. To begin with, they rarely engage with people so it is difficult to connect with others, let alone expand their network.
With the help of social media, it opens up various outlets from where we can connect with others. Exchanging information and building relationships virtually are easy, even from our safe place. Social networking sites like Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter helps us expand as well as maintain relationships.
I seldom connect with people. And even if I build a relationship, I struggle to maintain that bond. Personally, I prefer “texting” over calls. So, social media has made it a lot easier to strengthen my relationships.
4. More control over how we portray ourselves
Introverts are reserved, rarely disclosing details about themselves. It’s because of that we struggle to socialize in face-to-face interaction. Also, sometimes when questions are asked in public, we tend to get uncomfortable. That feels personal and we seldom know how to react. So, we end up sharing more than we intend to.
I have experienced many situations where I have shared more details. Although that happened subconsciously, I used to overthink a while later. Such situations still make me uncomfortable.
Luckily, social media is a life savior for us. Now, we have control over how much we want to share about ourselves. It is much comfortable and we have the benefit of ignoring such questions too. I feel we show our true selves when we are comfortable. And, privacy is our solace.
5. Attending online workshops and webinars
Most introverts avoid public events, overall human interaction. So when the time comes, it becomes overwhelming to socialize. However, online workshops and webinars give us space to begin to adjust from our comfort zone.
There have been many times when I wanted to attend public events, but couldn’t. I couldn’t because I was insecure about how I would socialize with people. But, thanks to social media, it has been easier to participate in online workshops and webinars.
This lock-down was the most productive I had ever been in a long time. I attended many online workshops and webinars like Leadership and Organizing, report writing, fighting online sexual harassment, etc. That was the beginning for me to face my insecurities.
These are some of the ideas on how introverts enjoy their time on social media. It is a blessing in disguise.
