Gender Equality. Wait, Women Aren’t Worth It? I’m 22.

A girl from central Kathmandu city with Bachelor’s Degree dreaming about pursuing a Master’s Level from London and moving to Dubai to get my dream job in the biggest textile industry.

But wait, is the news that’s been trending even real? Do women under 40 really have to take approval from family and local ward office to go abroad?

In that case, either being a girl is a sinful fault, or me dreaming about having an independent life is a complete waste of time. Actually, the law being passed is regressive.

On one hand, the government is implementing millions of budgets for the empowerment of women and on another hand, such a move by the government is controversial and shameful.

We are in the modern 21st century and acts and laws like such are likely to enforce the citizens to step back to the same autocratic regime that we fought for years ago. Why are we even not speaking? ‘We’ resembling daughters, mothers, young teenagers, and everyone who lives in this democratic country.

We talk about gender equalities most of the time. But treating women like a caretaker, a slave or an object is not justifiable. In the society where women entrepreneurs are emerging, women leaders are struggling to stand out and reforming the poor mindset of the ever-existed patriarchal society, decision-forcing women to fall on their toes is a crime.

Dear government, are we women not worth value to you? Is it mandatory to handcuff our independent life and rights by trying to bring unacceptable rules of laws?

Let me help you clarify the problem and give an alternative solution before you amend the law.

Major Problems Cited:

  • Women are being sold out, girl trafficking is increasing day by day
  • Being a woman it’s unsafe to travel to an unknown city or country alone
  • Women misuse their independence and others take grant over their weakness
  • Other many inappropriate problems

If these are the major problems, bringing a new law that forces women to be dependent on society and males to live by their life is an unrealistic solution and unacceptable.

Girls are being trafficked? Find them and rescue them. Execute new strict laws against those traffickers and give justice to the victims. Cancel visas where there’s a high chance of being mistreated or trafficked.

Another is: Border security needs to be improved. Most trafficking cases get unreported as nobody knows the victim crossed the loose border and was sold to the third-party. If only the border security was strict enough, more than 50% of the girl trafficking abroad gets reduced.

Both women and men traveling alone abroad can be challenging. The solution can be to give self-defense training. Teaching about the good touch and the bad touch, being self-aware of the situation around you, can be a fruitful decision if one feels unsafe. But, amending rules that bound women’s right to travel abroad independently is a messy decision. It doesn’t safeguard the rights of women but it violates their basic rights as well.

So, what’s the need of implementing such a law?

I am not going to sacrifice my dreams thinking I might feel unsafe traveling abroad.

I would rather look for ways to safeguard myself but the new rule requiring young girls/women like me under 40 to take the approval of family and local government body is not the permanent solution to what the problem is being stated.

This should not happen at any cost.
