If you are searching for a place to travel near Kathmandu Valley, Bethanchowk Hill could be your next destination.

Situated in Kavre district with a highest altitude of 3000m, this hill is the highest hill of the Mahabharat Range. Also famous as ‘KING OF HILLS’, this nearby destination is full of nature, scenery beauty and adventure.

One can go for a short hike, do camping at top of the hill or even stay at local community homestay.

Major Details:

Location: Kavre

Distance: 85 Km (From Old Buspark; opposite of Bir Hospital to bethanchowk, Narayanthan)

Altitude: Around 3000m

Specialty: King of hill, highest altitude of Mahabharat range, Narayanthan Temple, 360 View of Mountain and ranges

Cost: 1500-2000 Average (Individual)

Entrance Fee: None

Place Rating: 9.5/10

Difficulty while hiking: Medium

How to Get To Bethanchowk:

Via Bus-

  1. Get a Bus to Panauti From Old Bus park. It usually takes 1.5 to 2 hr. to reach Panauti bus park
  2. From Panauti Bus park, you take another bus to Dhunkharka. It takes another 1.5 hour max to reach there.
  3. Find a community homestay near Dhunkharka and stay there at night
  4. Next morning, hike to the top of the hill

It takes 4-5 Hour walk to reach the highest Bethanchowk hill for average walkers from Dhunkharka. For local and regular hikers, it takes half the time allocated above.

Via Private Transportation:

  1. Drive to Panauti via 2 wheeler or 4 wheelers
  2. Then from Panauti to Dhunkharka
  3. Now, you can either stay at Dhunkharka and hike 4 hours next day or camp on top of the hill the following night.
  4. If you plan to do camping, you can drive further more to the last point, park your vehicle and hike for about an hour or more to reach the peak of the hill

You can rent a tent or buy your own if you plan to do camping.

How’s Weather: Very Windy, Comparatively colder at night

Bus fare: From Old buspark to panauti: Rs 60

From Panauti to Dhunkharka: Rs 60/65

Homestay package: Rs 1000-1500 (includes 2 veg meals, 2 times lunch, room for 1 night, fire camp and music equipment and more)

Things to carry while travelling to Bethanchowk:

-Easy Bag pack,

-Torch light

-Chocolates, Medicines, Packed Food & more(There isn’t any shops as you start climbing up the hills, so buy them at Dhunkharka or even earlier)

-Easy lightweight but warm clothes (Windcheater Jacket, warm trousers, shoes, Gloves, Topi/Cap, Scarf)

– Water (2 bottle minimum)

-Sunglasses, Sun cream (Optional)

Note: *The last bus from Panauti to Dhunkharka leaves between 5:00-5:30

*The last bus from Dhunkharka back to Kathmandu leaves between 4:00-4:30
