A Slight Change in the Plan ! Written by Smritee Neupane [Offline Thinker]

It’s Saturday.

Ah, finally, a day to recline, to let things transpire. I will watch a wonderful series and a nap. With these thoughts, I land to my room after a good meal and chores achieved. A day with no responsibilities to serve, no gatherings, simply me. Self-care and slowing down after a lengthy, speedy week. I reach to my Personal Computer and I press the power button, the monitor and keyboard glow. A logo of the company Dell in the middle of the screen and Ubuntu beneath it. I am now waiting for the logo to disappear. And the authentication required thing to appear somehow. However, that doesn’t happen. My PC just froze.

It took me a moment to sink in what’s going on. I waited for some minutes and restarted the laptop, using the power button. Supposing this time it doesn’t befall with a problem alike. Which it didn’t, though I land in a different one. It presented me with a set of instructions that detailed the errors stating:

Kernel panic– not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block (0,0).

I have shifted to a Linux operating system: Ubuntu lately and had no problem since. It asked for frequent updates and I just installed them as it consumes less time than of a Windows OS. I installed an update before wrapping things up for Friday. I went to sleep afterwards and opened my laptop today (Saturday).

I stand with a frozen laptop for like 30 minutes now. Felt like my life has stopped. I am continually checking the internet to figure things out. Approaching my computer expert colleagues and panicking. It was 1:00 and me with the information that it’s a grub problem and information about the kernel-panic. Several websites with a query that resembles mine, yet not one that resolves them. Remember, when I was excited to watch a series, look like my life is transforming into one.

I wasn’t satisfied with the shift in the plan swiftly. Felt like the universe was plotting things against me. Its own way of rendering everything. I had nothing in my hand except to keep myself sane, and I tried my best. Half of the day already ended, then I spotted something.

Thanks to the website: Ask Ubuntu. I started my computer in rescue mode. So I restarted my PC again, clicked the advanced options. It landed on a page where there were recovery options. Now, which one is the best for me? I operated with the first option. It didn’t work. Then the second one. Luckily, it worked with warnings. I went along and eventually land to my home screen. It didn’t serve enough, and I had to live-boot the OS. Still, it was a lot when I had nothing. I couldn’t access every feature my PC provided, but something is better than nothing right!

So, I adopted the computer in the recovery mode until I could boot it. I had no USB and had to borrow it from a friend. Then download a bootable Ubuntu. Once completed, I boot the OS, and after some process; I land to my home screen afresh. I did some quick updates and upgrade to my OS. To assure I don’t get the problem alike and it’s performing great momentarily. Multiple methods of crosschecking, and thankfully I am now hassle-free.

A day invested in my computer, a device that serves as a medium to equate to the globe. Through it, I can access entertainment, intellect, and a unique perspective. It was a lot of stress as it wasn’t working perfectly. I guess nature wanted me to grow experience rather than spending the day with random videos. I learned a lot during the process. Although I have not handled the circumstances in the best way possible. Things are now under control, and you know how? Because I writing this in the same OS that I fixed.

Last, if you are interested in some motivation, then here it goes: “Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving.”– Albert Einstein.

Keep moving folks.
