Rap Scene in Nepal

Why did it start?

Nepali rap also known as Nephop is one of the rapidly growing music industries of Nepal. This started when electronic DJs started mixing classic Nepalese songs with western urban style in the early ’80s.

The first Nepali rap to be ever recorded was rap “Batti Balera” by an artist Ratan Subedi in the year 1991. Later on, Girish Khatiwada{G.P} and Pranil Timilsina continued the proper form of rap in Nepal.

G.P’s song “म यस्तो छु, त्यस्तो छु” was one of the rap songs that attracted Nepali audience towards rap culture. But he alone couldn’t heighten the Nepali rap scene in Nepal. People were unaware of rap culture in Nepal.

Later, 3 male-group named ‘Nepdayz’ stepped in to continue the legacy of Nepali rap. In 2008, the Nepali rap industry took a big turn as Yama BuddhaI(Anil Adhikari) took over Nephop.

Exploring ways to spread the rap culture in youths, he co-organized an open-rap battle show ‘Rawbraz’. This brought new amateur rappers in highlight. The show was broadcasted on Youtube and became a massive hit.

People started to learn more about rap culture. More youths were attracted to freestyle rap and rap verses. Yama Buddha became an idol to many youngsters who were new to Nephop. He is still considered the King of Nephop.

Along with the battle show, he recorded his hits. His songs Saathi, Ama ,Foothpath mero Ghar, Antya ko suruwat, and almost every song are widely appreciated in Nepal.

He was an inspiration to many. Indian rapper Raftar also appreciated Yama Buddha on his show ‘Roadies’.

As Nephop grew bigger, aspiring talented rappers like Laure, Uniq Poet, Balen, Sacar a.k.a Little Buddha, MCflo, V-ten came to light. Both Nepali and English raps flourished in Nepali Rap Industry.

But with the demise of Yama Budhha in 2017  Nephop took a step back. Nepali Rap Industry lost a great rapper and the whole nation preached his goodness.

Though Rawbraz continued with another rap legend Girish Khatiwada, it couldn’t impact as it used to be.

Despite that, Nephop is still grooming and growing. New hidden talents are finding their way into the industry. Youtube has become a great help for new artists.
